Montol in Penzance

Main Event – Montol Eve 21st of December 2010

5.45pm – The Selection of the Lord of Misrule by the casting of lots at St John’s Hall (beans) he or she that receives the golden bean in the drawing of lots will be the Lord of Misrule 2010.

6pmProcession leaves from St Johns Hall and a Second procession from Penzance Children’s Centre.

St Johns Hall Procession details, Bands, The Turkey Rhubarb Band, Kemysk, Bagas Crowd, The Hornets, Penwith Music Centre Drummers and Penzance Youth Wind Band. Lanterns and light sculptures available to members of the public please collect by 5.45pm. Other features the Sun Resplendent giant lantern, Tas Gwer, the horned guisers and other new mystical figures from the Guise dance tradition.

Children’s Centre Procession – Led by Penzamba, please make your lanterns before the event at the Children’s Centre see web site for details.

6.30pm – Lescudjack Hill fort,

Order of ceremony

Arrival of performers and public, followed by a performance by Penzance Youth Wind Band , Fire performance from Fyreplay followed by the entry into the circle of the Turkey Rhubarb band and lighting of the beacon by the Lord of Misrule. World premiere of Axial Lilt by our new dance group Donsyures Montol. Departure of the massed bands and return to Penzance.

Chapel Street Montol Party at 8pm.

Chapel Street closed for entertainment.

Order of proceedings

Cornish Dance Sensations Kemysk at the Union Hotel at 8.30pm.

Turkey Rhubarb band perform the tradition of Guise Dancing from 8.30pm in all Chapel Street pubs.

Fyreplay’s amazing fire throwing performance on the forecourt if Chapel Street Methodist Church from 9pm, our very own fire performers in their home environment, more music and dance in all local pubs.

Events at PZ GallerTre Project launches screening of local archive films by holding a special event during Montol 2010. From 7.30pm at the Pz Gallery the evening will bring together Cornish archive films, music, heritage and celebrating the coming of winter. The archive films will then be screened daily throughout the winter months at Pz gallery. 7.30pm Premier of short films produced by BBC Video Nation / awen productions cic partnership. 3 x short films of the history of Penzance High Street made by local people. 8.00pm Premier of local archive films + live piano music and mulled wine 9.30pm Live music by local legends ‘Death by Skiffle’ (4 piece jazz skiffle ensemble) Lighting of bonfire followed by 11pm till late screening of local films + second set by ‘Death by Skiffle’ Penwith based Awen Productions cic have collated over 7 hours of local footage as part of The Tre Project – Rediscovering Cornwall & Isles of Scilly through archive film; Cornish wrestling in Canonstown in the 60′s, Padstow Obby Oss in the 70′s, snowy days on Scilly in the 50′s, demolition of power stacks in Hayle 1981 are just some of the insights to living in the most westerly part of the UK.

The 10.30 Torchlit Procession and chalking of the Mock ceremony

Please meet at 10.15pm at Prince’s street outside the Exchange Galleryand collect your flaming torches. The ceremony will conclude with the Chalking and lighting of the mock at 11pm, will you have the priviledge of having the duty of chalking the mock this year?- Party afterwards at PZ Gallery.

  • 5.45pm - Selection of the Lord of Misrule by the casting of lots – St John’s Hall Steps.
  • 6pm – River of Fire Processions from St Johns Hall and other locations in Penzance. Please join in and dress in the traditional style, masks, mock posh, ribbons, formal hats. Anyone can join our parades.
  • 7pm – Lescudjack Hill Fort – Performances from the Turkey Rhubarb band and others, world premier of Axial Lilt by Donsyures Montol and the lighting of the Montol beacon.
  • 8pm - Chapel Street Montol Party - Road closed ,Street Entertainment, Fire Show, music in the pubs and on the street, Guise dancers will be performing all evening. The World Famous Cornish Dance Sensations Kemysk at the Union Hotel from 8.30pm,
  • Events at Penzance Gallery – Green Street Penzance 7.30pm Premier of short Films by BBC Video Nation, 8pm Local Archive Films, piano music and mulled wine 9pm Live music with local legends Death by Skiffle. 11pm Montol party and film show with set after by Death By Skiffle.
  • 10.30pm Torch Lit Procession led by the Turkey Rhubarb band – Meet at Princes street outside the Exchange Gallery @ 10.15pm. Followed by the Chalking and burning of the Mock
